    Job Title: Counselor
    Employment: Certified School Calendar plus 10 days
    Salary: Auxiliary Salary Schedule
    Reports to: Principal
    Supervises: No Supervisory Responsibilities

    • Arizona teaching certificate (valid).
    • Three (3) years of full-time teaching experience.
    • Master’s or more advanced degree from an accredited institution preferred.
    • Completion of a graduate program in guidance and counseling from an accredited institution preferred.
    • Fluent in Spanish (oral, reading and writing), preferred.

    Required Skills:
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • Skilled in maintaining student records.
    • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
    • Ability to maintain calendars and schedule appointments.
    • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
    • Knowledge of academic standards governing student probation, suspension, and/or expulsion.
    • Ability to analyze and solve problems.
    • Knowledge of student recruitment and retention issues.
    • Ability to analyze course prerequisites, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements.
    • Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records.
    Essential Functions:
    • Assist middle school students to overcome problems that impede learning.
    • Provide academic advisement upon assessing a student’s academic level and goals.
    • Assist the principal and staff in registration of all students, helping to orient them to school procedures and various opportunities for learning.
    • Ensure students are enrolled in proper courses to meet middle school graduation.
    • Answer student inquiries and resolve problems related to curriculum and course selection.
    • Receive and review transcripts/records for all newly enrolled students for class placement.
    • Initiate and maintain individual student files as appropriate.
    • Review student files and meet with individual students to ensure deadlines are met for completing graduation requirements.
    • Coordinate with staff members and parents to aid in resolution of academic problems.
    • Review student grade reports each semester to determine need for student academic/behavior interventions.
    • Assist in proctoring examinations and other qualifying requirements or activities required by the school.
    • Collect, interpret and use student attendance data to develop strategies addressing dropout prevention.
    • Work with students, staff, parents and community for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems, resolving conflicts, referring to appropriate professionals, and enhancing student success.
    • Build partnerships with community agencies for the purpose of meeting student needs.
    • Support students for a successful transition to high school.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.
